Although the focus of this post is the marriage relationship, it can and should be practiced within the framework of any human relationship.
Unity within a marriage starts with the decision to love the way God loves and not according to our flesh. Our flesh, both physical and nature, can and will lie to us. But LOVE is spiritual and Godly love is unconditional.
This is why we, especially mothers, can love our children…no matter what, because that love is unconditional. But not so when it come to our spouses, that love is often conditional…very conditional. It is often based upon how you make me feel. But that is not what Godly love is all about. Godly Love is spiritual and has the ability to transcend time, space and fault. The Bible teaches us that Christ died for us, without reservation, while we were in our sins. And He STILL forgives us when we sin. That forgiveness is soaked in the blood of His Love for us. Therefore, we should be willing to exhibit the same forgiveness in love.
Now, please do not misunderstand my point. In the case where there may be abuses, PLEASE BE SAFE and take care of yourselves…but do it in love, not retaliation! Allow the love of God to flow through you in such a way that it facilitates repentance where necessary. We are commanded to love and not to retaliate, for that is an action of the flesh and not directed by the Spirit of God. The Bible teaches us to walk in the Spirit and the flesh will not rule us (Galatians 5:16).
Aside from that, we must understand that a marriage rooted in Christ should be the best example of the love of God to the world. What’s problematic is, we allow the world’s idea of a marriage and love to be our guide instead of what God has given us in His Word. The World’s idea of conflict resolution does nothing to actually resolve conflicts but rather increases them.
God teaches us to let our efforts bind us together and not drive us apart. We are to pursue peace with everyone…including spouses. But in order to really do this, we must be determined to allow love to prevail where we have every opportunity to allow the escalation of conflict. Love, when trusted in and allowed can and will conquer all. I am aware that some will disagree with this, based upon personal opinion or experience, and that’s okay. BUT I am of the opinion that the Word of God is right and gives us the power to overcome all.
So, let us take the opportunity to take hold to a novel concept where our marriages are concerned…or any relationship for that matter…to practice the power of unity through love. FOR GOD IS LOVE!!!
Remember, that the scripture declare the “love never fails” (1 Cor. 13:8)
