Follow God…Make Him Your Focus

FollowGodAnd he took the mantle of Elijah that fell from him, and smote the waters, and said, Where is the Lord God of Elijah? and when he also had smitten the waters, they parted hither and thither: and Elisha went over.2 Kings 2:14 (KJV)

This is normally directed toward people who are in active ministry or seeking to be in ministry. But, I would argue that every Christian is in ministry of some form because our lives are to be representative of the risen Savior to a world that desperately needs Him.

We live in a world of “hero-worship.” This is not good anywhere, especially in the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ! When I say hero, I’m speaking of the celebrities or sports superstars that we look up to. Unfortunately in the Church, we have those who have become spiritual superstars—those we hold in such high esteem that we fail to see God in them.

We fail to recognize that these are individuals that—assuming—have an anointing on their lives and the anointing or blessing on them is from God. In other words, the thing that attracts us to them is the Spirit of God that resides within them.

Although we may attend the church they pastor or follow their ministry through other means—it should be the Lord within and not the things they do that we follow. Paul instructed us to follow him as he follows Christ (1 Corinthians 11:1). I believe we dishonor the Lord when we place the emphasis on the person—who needs Him as much as we do.

Yes, we should give honor to the person who serves as an example of how to serve the Lord faithfully. However, we should not forget where the blessing flows from. God is faithful to bless you and I— as well as others recognized as having an anointing from Him — when we make Him and His Word our focus. This brings us to the verse I started with:

And he took the mantle of Elijah that fell from him, and smote the waters, and said, Where is the Lord God of Elijah? and when he also had smitten the waters, they parted hither and thither: and Elisha went over.

Elisha found himself standing alone when he was used to being with his leader. His faith, provision, and victories were all based on the faith and actions of his leader. But one day he had to trust the God of his leader. He had to look to God for himself. This is exactly where He wants us—looking to Him for our needs and desires every day—not waiting for some special blessing to fall from someone else.

Where is the Lord God of (name your favorite minister)? He is right here with you. Serve Him, love Him, trust Him, worship Him, and follow Him—He will take you over your obstacles.

It is Christ within you that is the “hope of glory”. We have to be God-inside minded. This is where our victory starts.

Great message, glad I found this blog.

  5. Wonderful – I missed the point in the Bible story of Elijah/Elisha. The day came when Elisha had to place the entire weight of his trust in the Lord alone. There was no one else to lead him. Hmmm. I need to meditate on that truth. Thanks!

Good and necessary words, Brother. Interesting that Jesus lifted up the widow who had pennies to give as an example (not hero!) above all the rich and famous (heroes!). Stop worshiping these “heroes” and start following their example! They are only doing what God asked them to do, so do the same for what God asks you. We’d rather have idols than the real thing, it seems. Then we can be spectators instead of getting crunched on the front lines. Can I be so crude as to say people would rather wear the bum-pads of the devil than the armour of God?
